Council vice president of education, Margaret Lonzetta, poses with Phil Martelli, head coach of men's basketball, St. Joseph's University, at her June 10th celebration |
On the evening of Tuesday, June 10, 2008, the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia celebrated Council vice president Margaret Lonzetta's 35 years of dedication and service. The event was highlighted by remarks from special guest speaker Phil Martelli, head coach of men's basketball, St. Joseph's University. Margaret presented the Council's Excellence in Education awards to senior students Rupalee Rashatwar (Eastern Regional HS, NJ) and Kristen Santerian (Academy of Notre Dame de Namur, Villanova), and to teachers Donna Donato (Eastern Regional HS, NJ) and Mark Stover (Jenkintown Middle School, Jenkintown).
In honor of Margaret's enduring commitment to international education, the Council has established the Margaret Lonzetta Global Leadership Fund for economically disadvantaged students attending Philadelphia city schools. This fund will be dedicated to creating partnerships with selected students and teachers to provide the necessary support and resources required to sustain long-term participation in the Council's education programs. The cornerstone to this scholarship initiative is a $20,000 challenge grant, for which we have already received a lead gift from Council members Stanley and Arlene Ginsburg. |
