On the evening of Wednesday, April 16, 2008, the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia presented its Atlas Award in recognition of, and gratitude to, U.S. troops and veterans of service in Iraq and Afghanistan. This event took place just weeks after the fifth anniversary of the onset of the war in Iraq at the Sheraton Philadelphia Center City Hotel.

General James E. Cartwright, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, accepted the Atlas award on behalf of the troops and veterans of the region. The Council also made a gift of $110,000 to the National Military Family Association to support their work educating, informing and representing the changing needs of families from all of the uniformed services.
