Education Now! Series: Workforce and Global Competitiveness Panel, February 23, 2011

On Wednesday, February 23rd, the Council hosted the second event in its Education Now! series. The discussion featured leaders across various disciplines on the state of the U.S. labor market, the economic impact of an underprepared workforce and current initiatives to create a workforce capable of successfully competing in an increasingly global economy. The evening's panel included Jonas Prising, President - Americas, Manpower and National Chair, Junior Achievement; Emily DeRocco, President, Center for the American Workforce, The Manufacturing Institute, National Association of Manufacturers and Assistant Secretary, U.S. Department of Labor (2001-07); Lisa J. Nutter, President, Philadelphia Academies, Inc., a non-profit youth development organization that works in Philadelphia's public high schools to provide career-based learning experiences; Charles E. Ryan, co-founder of UFG, the largest investment company in Russia, Chairman of UFG Asset Management and Senior Advisor to Deutsche Bank AG; Sandra Shea, editorial page editor of the Philadelphia Daily News; Dr. Joseph Bordogna, Alfred Fitler Moore Professor of Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania; Dr. Arvind V. Phatak, Executive Director, Temple University's Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER); and was moderated by Gregory J. Osberg, Publisher and Chief Executive, Philadelphia Media Network.
