Welcome to the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia

Membership for the 2018-2019 school year is now open!

Why Join? The World Affairs Council is a non-profit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to informing and engaging people of all ages on matters of national and international significance. The Council’s education programs aim to:

• Expand students' knowledge of and engagement with global affairs topics such as world geography, cultures, economics, languages and international relations;

• Increase students' ability to understand and recognize emerging transnational issues from a range of perspectives;

• Help students develop the critical thinking, problem-solving and leadership skills, as well as confidence needed to succeed in a competitive global economy; and

• Enhance students' opportunities to work creatively and collaboratively across local and global borders.

High school membership entitles all students and faculty of a participating high school to take part in the Council's annual global education programming (e.g., International Student Summit, Global Economic Forum, Welcome Back Reception, etc.). High school members also enjoy access to resources and special events, including International Career Night and ongoing briefing events for student and teachers.

Additionally, high school membership with the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia offers you and your students unparalleled access to influential leaders and policymakers in the global arena. Through the Council’s signature Speaker Events, students have the opportunity to listen to and pose questions of some of the leading public figures and scholars on the world stage today. Recent past speakers include: Joseph Biden, former Vice President of the United States; Janet Yellen, Chair of the U.S. Federal Reserve; Stephen Breyer, U.S. Supreme Court Justice; Paul Ryan, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives; Michael Hayden, former Director of the CIA and NSA; Mary Robinson, President of Ireland (1990-1997) and United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (1997-2002); and Thomas Friedman, Pulitzer Prize winning columnist for The New York Times, among many more!
